There have been a couple of attempts at mapping the Witch World over the years. No one seems to have even tried to map the Waste, and the other maps do not always take into account new information (like the fact the Eyrie was destroyed). Would it be possible to try and list all locations mentioned in all the books and try to get a rough idea of where things are located? The relative distance between most places would likely have to be given in terms of 'days walking' or 'days riding' since actual miles or leagues are very rarely used. Haste and adverse/favorable weather conditions would also have to be mentioned.
What we need are names and where each place is in relation to each other and other such geographical detail. The GURPS Witch World has a number of quite detailed maps of the Witch World. Their accuracy is, of course, dubious. If anyone would like a copy of the .pdf file of the GURPS WW manual, PM me with your email and I'll send it.
Otherwise, there is a rough map of the eastern continent in the front of Tales of the Witch World 1, 2, & 3, Four from the Witch World, Storms of Victory, Flight of Vengeance, On Wings of Magic, Songsmith, The Key of the Keplian, The Magestone, The Warding of the Witch World, and Ciara's Song.
Rough maps of the Western continent are a bit more rare and only appear in Tales of the Witch World 1, 2 & 3, Four from the Witch World, Storms of Victory, Flight of Vengeance, On Wings of Magic, and Songsmith.
Does anyone have one of "The Authorized Map of the Witch World created with the guidance and approval of Andre Norton herself, illustrated in full color by Mary Hanson Roberts, the map comes as a two-sheet set, from the address below: Make checks payable to: The Wizard's Nook, P.O. Box 16085, Plantation, FL 33318 (Send $15 plus $3 for shipping)"?
I suspect the rough maps in the later books were based on these. I think it says in the GURPS book that their maps were based on these.
I'd like a copy of that map. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to start the places articles since there are only two mentioned continents but several different countries.
Yea, me too. Again, I suspect they're the same as the ones printed in the Tales anthologies (except in b&w instead of colour of course). You might find the GURPS maps interesting because they do list a whole bunch of places which may or may not actually be in the books. Again, careful cross checking on directions from the stories will determine if the GURPS maps are anywhere near accurate or not.
I am not sure what to do with the Dales. There are hundreds of them, and the list of sites in them could be nearly endless! Also, I'm not sure how to place them in relationship with one another… I mean Arvon is to the north of High Hallock in general, as the Waste is generally to the west, but the individual Dales act like individual countries. Any suggestions?
Well, the G.U.R.P.S. Witch World has a pretty detailed map of the Dales with a lot of Dales named and places in the Dales. Again, like the calender, not sure how accurate, but at least it's a starting point. Do you have a copy? I've got a .pdf file of it. Private Message me your email and I'll see if I can't send it to ya if you're interested.
I understand about the possible problem with accuracy but, as you say, it's at least a start. I have almost all the books now, so I can cross-reference them. I've sent you two private messages (having forgotten to put my e-mai in the first). I look forward to seeing the maps!
